University of Bath ensures Fire Safety for the Hearing Impaired

The University of Bath is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the needs of students with disabilities by installing a reliable fire alarm solution to alert deaf and hearing-impaired students, staff and visitors to alarm activations at the university, in line with current requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

University of Bath logo The university is working with northern firm Clarion Communications, demonstrating its proactive approach to the act by ensuring all facilities at the university are made available to individuals with disabilities. LifeLine Alarm systems will provide the safety and re-assurance that deaf and hard of hearing people are being given the same access to fire alarms as everyone else on the campus.

The LifeLine systems are radio-based units and will form an integral part of Bath University’s main fire alarm system. Units are being been fitted to university buildings across the entire campus to ensure full coverage for alarm signals at all times.

Should a fire alarm be activated in any university building, the LifeLine unit alerts individual(s) in that area carrying a LifeLine vibrating pager unit provided by the university, and will be advised to either evacuate the building or alternatively will be notified of any test alarms being carried out.

Individuals staying in Halls of Residence will also be issued with LifeLine SleepCOM units. The SleepCOM is a bedside unit linked to a vibrating pillow pad to waken an individual from their sleep during the night should an alarm situation occur. This clearly demonstrates the universities 24x7 commitment to safety and protecting the needs of it’s deaf and hearing-impaired students, staff and visitors at all times.

The LifeLine symbol will be seen displayed in reception areas, building entrances and foyers throughout the university where a LifeLine unit is providing coverage.
